Akwa United were attacked by fans of Yobe Desert Stars after their 1-0 win in Wednesday’s Nigeria Professional Football League match in Damaturu.
The victory was Akwa United’s second straight win in the NPFL this season. Mfon Udoh bagged the only goal of the encounter.
According tweets on the official Twitter handle of Akwa United, the home fans hurled stones at the players after the game and also vandalized their bus.
“Yobe fans are furious and are throwing stones onto the pitch. Both sets of players and the officiating officials are in the middle of the pitch. Police are using tear gas to push the fans back,” Akwa United tweeted.
“Our team bus has been vandalized by angry Yobe Stars fans after our 0-1 victory against their team in Damaturu.”
It remains to be seen what sanctions will be handed to Yobe Desert Stars by the League Management Company who recently fined Plateau United and Niger Tornadoes N1m each for crowd troubles at their venues.
